In this chapter we see the kindness of David to Mephibosheth. Despite of David's triumph and victory he never forgets hi oath to Jonathan. Sometimes we Christian forget the gratitude we owe, not only to our friends but to God Himself. But as we look to David's attitude he is indeed the man after God's own heart. He knows how faithful God is to Him and in return he shows faithfulness to one another.
I love this chapter because it details the kindness and the grace that God offered to his children. As we look and see the story of David, we concluded that David was a type of Christ. From the view point of David's kindness to Mephibosheth may we be reminded of the kindness and love of God to fallen men. It seems remarkable how David shows mercy to Saul's family despite of spontaneous bitterness he once had from Saul. We as a Christian must also be like David to do good things to our enemy (Luke 6:35-36).
David's great example of kindness reveals how great God has been merciful and kind to him by forgiving much and giving much. From Luke 7:47 - “Therefore I say to you, her sins, which are many, are forgiven, for she loved much. But to whom little is forgiven, the same loves little”. The best basis for kindly service to man is experiencing God's mercy. Long before a person can be truly merciful, God has been merciful to him.
Mephibosheth is the representative of every human who is lame because of sin and for Jonathan's sake mercy, and restoration of inheritance was given to him who lost everything because of Saul. For Jesus sake who died on the cross, and pays for our sins, God forgives us and restores what we'd lost because of Adam.
